VOLUNTEERS are needed for Shoreham’s annual spring beach clean taking place on Sunday (March 17).

Anyone who would like to take part in this worthwhile event can just turn up on the day, meeting at 2.30pm by the Old Fort at the east end of Shoreham beach. There is free parking by the river towards the end of Harbour Way.

Litter pickers and rubbish bags will be supplied but gardening gloves and stout shoes are advisable, as well as warm clothes to keep the March winds at bay.

Refreshments will be provided afterwards and there will be a prize for the most unusual piece of litter found.

Joy Daintree, chairman of organisers Friends of Shoreham Beach, said that the longshore drift brings the marine litter towards the harbour arm at this time of year. It’s an ongoing task to keep the beach free of rubbish that is not only unsightly but also deadly to marine life – as well as dangerous to those using the beach,” she said. “We’re very proud of our marine environment and do our best to keep it clean and safe for all to enjoy.”

Cigarette butts are the most common item found on UK beaches.

They aren’t fully biodegradable and are sometimes mistaken for food by marine animals.

There are harmful chemicals in the cigarette that are released back into the environment.

For more information, call Joy Daintree on 01273 462584 or log on to www.fosbeach.com
