SOUTHWICK pupil Esmé Jarvis has bagged a big prize in an arts competition.

The eight-year-old Glebe Primary School pupil won £250 for the Church Lane school, and a £25 gift card for herself, after designing the winning Tesco shopping bag.

She will also see her design printed on 250 re-usable jute shopping bags, which will now be distributed to parents and children at the school.

The competition was run at the Tesco Extra in the Holmbush Centre, Shoreham, to promote its click and collect online groceries shopping service.

Last week, Esmé visited the store to pick up the prize, accompanied by teacher Ali Godfrey, three of her school friends and her younger brother, Devon.

Mrs Godfrey who, along with art co-ordinator Miss Sarah Leverton, had brought the competition to the attention of the school, said: “We are all very proud of Esmé, but this win is not a total surprise as she has won several prizes for her artwork at school over the past few years. She obviously is a very talented girl!”

Head teacher Mrs Ann Walton was thrilled to share the giant cheque with the whole school at Friday’s assembly, when everyone gave out the hugest of cheers.

She said: “With Esme’s approval, we are going to suggest to our Learning Council, which represents the pupils in the school, that we put the money towards a charity called School in a Bag, which provides bags packed with pencils, notebooks, etc., to send to children in Africa.

“It just seems to be such a perfect way to spend the prize-money – with the idea that from the design of the one bag, we are able to make many more bags for the benefit of others – and the children in Africa will have the chance to draw and create pictures, just like Esmé.’”

Her entry was selected by judges for its colour, impact, sense of fun and style.

A spokesman for Tesco said click and collect was already a big hit with busy customers who want their grocery shopping picked and packed, but don’t have the time to wait at home for a delivery.
