Environmental and trading standards checks are underway at a Bramber pig farm, a district cabinet member has confirmed.

Sue Rogers, HDC cabinet member for a safer and healthier district, has met with environmental officers and trading standards to investigate Red Gate Farm.

She said: “It’s a countryside location, but it’s in an elevated position that is visible to residents and at times there’s an odour in the area.”

Red Gate Farm said in a statemement: “We are in regular contact with all agencies concerned and they all are happy with our farming practices.

“Would people rather we reared our pigs indoors where natural behaviours are inhibited or would they rather see pigs outside where they can play, dig, wallow and display natural behaviours?”

Thefarm has previously been the subject of complaints by neighbours over the sight and smell.

Farmer Jo Leddra told the County Times they ‘never mistreat their animals’ and work to the ‘highest welfare standards.’
