RESIDENTS are being encouraged to tackle speeding by setting up volunteer patrols.

Sussex Police wants people to organise Community Speed Watch groups to catch motorists driving illegally.

Volunteers will be trained by police officers in how to use speed monitoring equipment and report vehicles exceeding the limit.

Offenders will be written to the force and warned to stick to the speed limits, while those caught repeatedly breaking the law will be monitored by police patrols.

PC Paul Fielder, from Rye Neighbourhood Policing Team, where the scheme is already in place, said speeding was a key concern.

“I am really thankful for all of the help and support that Community Speed Watch teams give us to help tackle such a far-reaching problem,” he added.

“It is only through the collaboration of the local community working with the police to help educate drivers that we will stand a chance of reducing speeds and making our communities safer.

“We are keen to form CSW teams in all of the villages but we need your help.”

If you are interested in forming or joining a Community Speed Watch team, email paul.a.fielder@sussex.pnn.police.uk or call 101 ext 66262.
