EAGER wordsmiths can enter a free competition by crafting a poem about their local town or village.

Entrants can be any age and the winner will receive a £1,000 prize.

The competition is being held by United Press who often publish volumes of themed poetry exposing previously unknown poets.

Entries must be no more than 25 lines and 160 words and up to three poems can be entered as long as the content relates to their home town, whether that is history, people or everyday observations.

A spokesman for United Press, said: “We find that poems written from personal observation and experience are the most heartfelt and expressive.” Closing date is December 31.
