TWO major developments in Shoreham were approved by planners on Monday.

The scheme for the Frosts-Minelco site in Brighton Road, including Morrisons, restaurants, cafés and bars, is set to go ahead.

Outline plans for 120 homes, a riverfront café, 70-bed hotel and a range of commercial units at Ropetackle North, in Old Shoreham Road, were also agreed.

The schemes will change the shape of Shoreham, including opening up the river frontage and creating a new cyclepath, wider footway along Brighton Road and a new pedestrian crossing.

Speaking after the meeting, Cllr Peter Metcalfe, who chaired the committee, said: “I think it will actually encourage people to start walking into Shoreham more and enjoy the frontage along the River Adur. It will all be opening up, and that is the whole idea.

“The town is booming at the moment, it is a marvellous place to live.”

Several people spoke out against the Brighton Road plans but councillors decided the benefits outweighed the objections.

Cllr Mike Mendoza said after the meeting: “This was a good decision. It was good for Adur and good for my ward in central Shoreham.

“I look forward to the development going ahead as soon as possible, giving Shoreham town a wonderfully modern feel from the gateway from the east towards the magnificent Ropetackle development in the west.

“Very soon work will begin on the eyesore that was the Parcelforce site and, of course, eventually Adur Civic Centre will also be redeveloped.

“Shoreham will very soon be THE place to live and work.”
