VOTERS got behind three charity bids to help secure donations from the Lloyds Bank Community Fund.

Southwick Rugby Club and Leucan, a charity supporting families living in the area from Shoreham to Chichester, each received £3,000 from the fund.

A further £300 will go to 2nd Southwick Scout Group, which wanted the money to pay for the last piece of work to renovate their ageing Scout hut.

Shoreham Rugby Club said the money was vital for its new community clubhouse, in Buckingham Park, which will provide a base for hundreds of children and adults and encourage further growth of the youth section.

Chairman Mark Norris said: “It is a fantastic leap towards our goal and we are extremely grateful to people for voting.

“We know the club has a lot of support locally, not least from the many families who have members playing regularly for the club.”

Leucan was first set up in 1981 by parents of children attending Southlands Hospital in Shoreham and now works with families introduced directly from Worthing Hospital.

The charity was nominated by Sompting teenager Gemma Flowers, who won her battle with leukaemia and wanted to help other children suffering from cancer.
