Police are appealing for witnesses after two men pretending to be police officers searched a man’s home.

Two men knocked on a 70-year-old man’s door in the Martyrs Avenue on Friday (July 19) at 5pm and told him they were police officers, said Sussex Police.

He let them into his house and one stayed with him while the other disappeared into the house. They stayed for a few minutes before leaving.

The men returned on Saturday (July 20) at 4.50pm and the victim let them in. Again one man stayed with him while the other disappeared.

After they left, the victim checked his bedroom and found there had been an untidy search. He immediately alerted his neighbour. Nothing was stolen.

Detective Sergeant Glenn Willcocks said: “One man is described as 25 to 30 and one was around 40. Neither were wearing police uniforms.

“Please check ID for anyone who knocks on your door and don’t let anyone in who does not show you some.

“No police officer or official person will mind if you ask to see their warrant card or a form of ID and will wait while you check it properly.

“If anyone saw these men in the area or have information which might help, please contact police on 101 quoting serial 1221 of 20/7.”
